A number of senior Uruguay men’s football players have issued a statement in support of the strike taking place by the Uruguayan Mutual of Professional Soccer Players (MUFP). Footballers who perform in Uruguay’s top two divisions, Primera and Segunda, have been on strike since September 7 after clubs did not vote in favour of reforms put forward by the country’s players. The reforms proposed by the MUFP include, among other issues, increasing the minimum salary for players in the second Division, which FIFPro, the union representing footballers, claim has been the biggest difficulty.

The 36-year-old takes over from Hansi Flick, who was relieved of his duties on September 10 after Germany’s 4-1 loss to Japan in an international friendly. Flick’s sole major tournament during his tenure ended with Germany’s elimination from the 2022 World Cup at the group stage. The Athletic reported that Nagelsmann was set to be named the new Germany men’s national team head coach earlier this week. He will lead the team until after next summer’s European...

Martin Odegaard has committed his future to Arsenal by signing a new five-year contract. The Norway international was in the final 24 months of his last deal but put pen to paper on September 1 and is now secured until the summer of 2028. There is no option to extend. Odegaard becomes Arsenal’s highest-paid player after a smooth and relatively short process, which saw talks begin in May and produce the outcome that all parties wanted. The 24-year-old playmaker was starting to generate interest from elsewhere — however no discussions were entertained because the only focus was prolonging...

Rachel Daly believes heat and humidity could make it unsafe to play matches in the afternoon during the 2026 men’s World Cup in the U.S., Mexico and Canada. Daly, now at Women’s Super League side Aston Villa, played college football in New York with St John’s Red Storm and had professional stints at three sides in LA, as well as spending six years at Houston Dash in the NSWL. The 31-year-old England international was asked about her experiences competing in extreme conditions during her time in the U.S., including over summer, and how that might impact players at the 2026 World Cup.
Julian Nagelsmann is expected to be named the new Germany men’s national team head coach. He is set to be appointed on a short-term contract until the end of Euro 2024, which Germany are hosting. The 36-year-old will succeed Hansi Flick, who was dismissed on September 10 following his side’s 4-1 loss to Japan in an international friendly. Flick’s only major tournament in charge saw Germany exit the 2022 World Cup at the group stages. Nagelsmann has been out of management since March after being sacked by Bayern Munich. He joined Bayern on a five-year deal in July 2021 and won...

Twenty members of Spain’s Women’s World Cup-winning squad will not return to the national team for September’s Nations League fixtures despite Luis Rubiales’ resignation and the sacking of Jorge Vilda. A statement signed by 39 players in total has called for a full restructure of the Spanish football association (RFEF) to remove people who “have held, incited, hidden or applauded attitudes that go against the dignity of women”. The 39 players includes the seven cut from the preliminary World Cup squad and the 12 members of Las 15 — 15 players who rejected...
